My starter collage is officially on its way to Berkeley. What a journey it has been on!
First photo is what the collage looked like when I received it from Hannele.
There was so much going on, I decided to cut out a (much!) smaller area to focus on. This 2 1/4”x 2 1/4” section fit nicely into the lid of a silver box I had — tying in to the metallic/mirrored areas. Similarly, I added a bit of red text that fittingly reads “September to March”, drawing focus to the red elements.
Looking back on the progress pictures, I can say with confidence that every member of group 67 contributed to this small portion of collage!

When last two collages arrived, there was no documentation, and nothing left of my original; the entire collage was covered with scribbled-on paper and tape. So I decided to excavate, pulling off layers to see if I felt like anything underneath was salvageable, but pulling up the tape basically destroyed whatever was underneath. So I abandoned the effort and started anew. I had been going through old files and unearthed this hilarious (I thought) NYT photo and cutline I’d saved from 1997 about a “vegetarian festival” on the island of Phuket. Voila! New collage. I also tried to excavate the paper/tape from Mandy’s original, adding a few touches to what I could save beneath. I’m sending mine in and forwarding Mandy’s (very late, sorry Mandy and Marty!).

I realize this collage has two sides — I focused on one side only.
I wanted to contribute some themes and cohesion for this collage as it comes to a close. As it so often goes, I got a bit carried away!
I really enjoyed this one and apologize for taking it to a kind of dark place! The original mannequin figures in the top right are kind of spooky and I guess that inspired my direction :) Take it home, Bonnie!

The latest collage I received (I think it was in November, but I’m a little blurry) arrived from Julienne without documentation (according to the progress chart, I’m still awaiting two others, including my own). I guess it didn’t actually need documentation, but in past rounds, I’ve found it helpful to know a little about each participant’s process and intentions. In any case, life got in the way a bit more this year than in previous years, and I find myself wondering what lessons this round’s has offered. I feel perhaps not as invested in the project as I’ve felt before, and thus am more willing to take whatever comes. I’m also holding on less tightly to what leaves my hands. Hence, I’ve added few elements to this latest collage for no particular reason other than I thought they looked right. I’m looking forward to seeing the others when they arrive, and the final ones.

I’m uploading photos of the collaborators’ comments & of Julienne’s starter collage as received from Bonnie (front & back), and my additions. I added to the comment sheet, “There is no longer any art on the back–I feel grief & loss that these contributions to this collage are gone–destroyed–& that I’ll never see or be able to contribute to them. In addition, the plastic box over Liza Minnelli’s cleavage seemed to sexualize her breasts in a way that contrasted sharply with the halo-like gold behind her head (with her upward gaze), so I sought contributions to reflect healing, caring, & respect–a flower like we give flowers, spiritual figures of care. Just these three additions, but it was all I could face doing through such feelings of loss.“

here is Julienne’s starter collage as I received it (first two photos) and as I’m sending it (2nd two photos). It was double sided to start, but I took imagery from one side (and from the middle layers) and added it to the front to make it one sided. I had clear plastic film that I made into a 3d box thing and then I made a separate piece that fits in the box. This is a fun image! I loved playing with the textures, colors and shapes!

Added an oversized hand petting an oversized cat, and some miniature hikers. Left some of Hannele’s original art peeking through the landscape.
Up at the top with the birds, I put something down then changed my mind! Whoops! So there is some residue there for someone to deal with.

In previous years, I think perhaps I was too attached to my starter, and that affected my openness to the final result of the collaboration. This time, I’m saying “Yes” and leaving it wide open. I’m looking forward to seeing the (unpredictable) results!

I wanted to try something out of my comfort zone here with this dark grid source material. I found an old brochure from a teeth alignment company that I saved because I loved the reflective material it was printed on (that’s me waving). Have fun with these mirrors, Group 67!
I cut out a strikingly blue wristwatch face, then decided perhaps it was best viewed through the mirror…so I pasted it backwards with a bit of dimension to be viewable only from certain angles. And it was meant to be, I believe, as the lines on the back page of the watch lined up perfectly with the underlying grid.
