It appears to me that the damaged surface on the edge of the secondary mat of Yoshi’s collage results from an ill-advised application of museum putty on the Group 25 placard. For compositional reasons, we were considering the secondary mat—visually—part of the wall. Unfortunately, the card was placed as though the mat was—actually—the wall.
The secondary mat is taped to the back of the primary mat with masking tape—typically a temporary type of application—but in this case, with a fastidiousness that suggests otherwise. There may be adhesive involved, too, but I didn’t investigate that far. Since I found no explicit indication that it was to be removed, I presumed it was meant to stay, and I haven’t taken the opportunity to inquire with Yochi.
