Here is my final piece, ready to go – top complete, bottom how it originated. We mostly used earthtones and our interpretation of Soul, Sky, Sea, Sand.

I added some texture, pattern, typographic, and shape-based touches to Kate’s starter collage by adding cut paper swirly octopus tentacles and other ocean-themed items, typographic elements, acrylic paint marker paint daubs and patterns, an alcohol ink/yupo paper pillar – all with a random covering of encaustic wax. I loved adding mixed media to the piece to introduce depth and visual interest.

Working on the collage started by Lee, I added cut paper, paint, and visual texture. I love how rich and layered this piece is becoming as each artist adds their creativity.

I worked with a San Francisco teaching artist, Sam Provenzano, when I was a young teenager. One of his repeated messages was to “destroy to build” in order to improve your artwork (I even taught a class to 7th and 8th graders – also young teenagers – titled Destroy to Build in his honor). Whenever I receive a new round of this postal collage Sam’s words echo in my head and heart. Holding this philosophy close, I took this Zine (Kate’s the originator) apart then put it back together before letting it go, continuing it’s journey…

I added on to Tracy’s starter collage with new layers of paint, cheesecloth, stencils, and imagery. I am really enjoying watching these pieces evolve as everyone contributes their unique perspective and style.

I have sent Lee’s collage on to Terri in Maine. I added photographs taken at Stinson Beach, hand crafted paper, discarded dictionary pages, and blanket stitched embroidery thread around most of the edges. I am enjoying our shared palette and the way our theme is playing out.

Continuing on with our theme of Source: Sand, Sea, Sky, Soul and earth tones, I added to Kate’s starter, received from Lee. Painted rice paper, a tiny bird to complement Lee’s, more Rumi for soul retrieval, and sea creature cut-outs, all visible on the un-folded zine. Onward!
