This is Jackie Karsseboom’s starter collage. I added some tissue paper flowers, water, kayak and slivers of color around the animated character on right.

Val’s collage was busy with activity and I wanted to add some feelings of peace and reflection. I added the contemplative man in lower right and the waterfall.
I enjoyed the fanciful, story-like images in Gabrielle’s starter, so different from the melange in many other collages I’ve worked on. I added the skateboard and railing and some lace at the edges.

I added a second panel to Susanna’s college. She mentioned health, with hair and frogs. I added salmon and a stream to encourage healthy ecosystems. It’s been sent to Gabrielle. Others can choose which way is up!

I worked by adding additional surreal elements to Gabrielle’s starter. I wanted to emphasize the red in her dress so I added that to my black and white elements to create a narrative and tie everything together.

I dropped off my starter collage today, a gorgeous warm Bay Area fall day. Last year I started with an image that felt political as the year progressed. This year I started with a colorful hallway and added some fanciful elements (a floor of ocean), enjoying the contrast between structure and nature.
