Thank you to all the collaborators! I decided to start by making changes to the additions to help make the collage more abstract. Even with those additions, I was inspired to make it MORE abstract. Thus, I cut the collage up into pieces and reassembled it into this final collage. The collage border goes right up to the edge, although it was placed on white paper for the photo.

My collage returned to me from its journey and I completed it while visiting Western Mass to see exhibitions at The Clark and Mass MoCA. Always fun to be inspired by incredible artists! I added some more pieces to each side, fleshing out some of the ideas and color themes and wildlife. I feel like this piece as a whole might be a reference to the future; when humans have departed the Earth and nature is left in peace. What do you think?

In thinking of the theme “Community” that the originator, Andrea Sullivan, mentioned in her accompanying note, I ended up focusing on what elements of community I would like to include. That turned out to people, plants and a dog!

This collage was orginated by Andrea Sullivan. Helen Block added to it but did not indicate what was added and I’m not sure if anyone else had it prior to Helen?
I added a small black-and-white print made by a friend with a poem laying overtop of it, to be pulled back revealing the print.
The poem:
I kept a typewriter
I carried a little dark suitcases around
I asked the proprietor for some little space
I was a stranger
I was always moving about
I knew there was lightning on the moon
I hammered golden letters agains the night
I hammered golden letters against the wilderness
I held this light to myself
I had so little to say to all the rest

I kept asking myself the question that the originators, Austina Alexes and Royale XI, posed: “Looking through the window, what lies beyond?” And beyond was immediately outside the window what I literally see AND want to see. And I wrote this short poem to go with the collage:
Sitting
Looking through the window
Reflecting…
What do I see?
The beauty beyond
—each moment surrounds
Reflecting….mirroring back
Inward beauty
—love & joy
And I left some of the open white behind for the beyond the beyond. This I cannot imagine.

From the theme of “building I went from imagining where the building would be located to shifting to thinking of some interior elements and features. I imagined creating more space to put images by adding a border and finally opted to inserting most of the images in the center of one side with a few around the sides. These elements/ features include curves, light, bricks, larger stones, metal, warmth, openings, stairs, some color and a column.

Windows need chairs for sitting and gazing. I added a chair and footstool and then an echo of the butterfly on the pillow, flying, maybe out the window?

I received Amy’s project last week and wanted to add a colorful watercolor and acrylic background behind the bird to match Luna’s colorful solar superstorm on the other side of the bag. It was created on watercolor paper.

Inspired by Amy’s starter, I collaged on the backside of the bag, focusing on a background and image. An image of a solar super storm, the the color and light for the background and a wolf on the Earth looking at the viewer…

October 12, 2025 Andrea Sullivan sent me notes and a photo of her additions which I am adding here.
“I added a gel printed fern from the 40 acres I live on, as well as a couple other gel print background swatches. In addition, I added acrylic dots to the fields and put love in the backpack.“

I sent out my substrates of watercolor and acrylic with a message that the group can work on one or both. The final piece will incorporate both and be titled “Community”.

October 1, 2025. Sent the starter. I’m using a portion of a Sept 2022 calendar as a substrate on the picture side. I was attracted to old images of lichen, so the focus for the starter was color and shape, aiming for abstract. Looking forward to seeing how it morphs as you add and modify based on your inspiration.

Doubling up on the Progress Update, Helen Block sent a starter to me but forgot to photograph it so I’m posting Helen’s starter photos along with my additions and my update. Helen chose a building theme for her starter. I added some garden plans and some foliage. I’ve been thinking about how quickly the natural world takes over when we leave it alone. How quickly humans would be replaced if we were gone . . .

Sending off my starter today. Last round I really enjoyed playing with form and substrate and started my collage on a roll of adding machine tape. This time I am starting on a brown paper bag. I like the playful quality of something that is not quite “flat” (plus it’s still able to be folded flat for mailing) and I’m excited to see how others collaborate with me on the bag!
