We’ve had some trouble with international postage, so although we aren’t on schedule, we’re all playing along. Here is what I received from Gina’s starter. She wanted it to focus on histories pressing and fusing together. To continue with the woven theme that has evolved, I added some science washi to a frayed edge.

Mail between the States and Canada has been very slow, what with the postal strike and the holiday period.
I haven’t received Jessica’s collage from Gina yet, even though she sent it in November.
I’ll work on it immediately and mail it on quickly when it shows up.

Sent off collage from Jessica to Gina couple of weeks ago. The collage had a Japanese motif.. which I added some Daiso paper to keep with the theme. Looking forward to receiving the next one!

Well, I finally received Gina’s starter image today, sent Sept 16 here to Canada. It’s interestingly based on plastic. I’ve worked on it and it’s drying now. I’ll send it tomorrow to Charlotte.

I got Charlotte’s second starter (thanks USPS). I couldn’t help it, I just felt inspired to cut it in half. I added some green flowered paper and the white flowers are leftover from a store I worked at in jr high & high school… where Charlotte would shop (Bruce’s). Sorry for the terrible photo.

I received Jess’s piece with a frame within a chair image.. as a chair lover, I was thrilled by the invitation to work on it and was inspired to keep with the wood inspiration by filling the frame with tree trunks from a found image. And ten layering on sky images, thinking surreally, before I passed it along to Gina.

Image received from Canada, just in time before the strike! I liked the play of printed paper and transparency of the first stage, so I looked for paper that I had that had a similar vibe. The structured shapes are to contrast against the amorphic shapes of the paper. Sent off for Stage 3!

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has gone on strike following Thursday’s government announcement of sweeping service cutbacks. Canada Post’s operations will shut down for the duration of the strike; mail and parcels will not be processed or delivered. Canada Post promises, “All mail and parcels in the postal network will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible once operations resume.“
Last year, there was a Canada Post strike between November 15 and December 17. It was a cause for concern, but I think the affected groups were able to wait it out and complete the project without lasting impact.

This year I’m going to remember to photograph and post each step! The photo I took of my starter has a lovely shadow across it, but it adds to the mystery. I found a photo of a chair that really looked like a frame. I could’ve done more, but trimming away the excess I thought was enough for a first step. I only glued down the bottom, so I can’t wait to see how it evolves.
