December and January collages happening on the holidays. It’s an amazing process, trying to feel my way boldly but respectfully into a work started from and returning to someone else.

So I’ve been looking at the collage Ron started and gave me at the end of September, which is working in from the edges, and the one Pat started and Ron worked on in October, which is rising up from the bottom and by now has much less open space.
I am loving this process of thinking about what each person is adding, what else it could be, following the conversation even while taking it in somewhat new directions.
It’s been a wild month, but after a beautiful but intense synagogue listening session, I felt like spending the rest of that night making art, so I now have finished both (I’m a couple of days behind on one and within the time frame for the other, so October and November collages happened together.) Sending off these two collages to Adina tomorrow.”

I received my second collage and after meditating on it for some days, I was inspired to create my first collage (first photo) and also add to the second (second and third photos) in the same afternoon. I find it hard to work with a blank canvas, so receiving one already in progress helped get things in motion for me. Infinite possibility can be paralyzing. Excited to see all the layers as this project progresses.

I have received and am living with the second collage. Already engaging the first two offerings I am noticing a tendency I have to add dark to light, content to color field. I will be curious to see if this continues. Also aware of how nourishing it is to collaborate with another artist, just feels so good. And as we are a group known to each other and with an ethos of “no comment” it is super fun and new learning to comment to one another.

Had a version of a “what else could this be?” collage (first photo, 12″ square) that I worked on for quite a while. Got murkier. Frustrated with it and feeling like it covered a lot of territory but also that everyone could do whatever they wanted to it. Took a knife to it and interrupted the surface. Put on words, cut up photos: it was one kind of invitation.
In the middle of the night, a clear voice from inside said, “Don’t send that.” Had a sense the next day of what paper to use (7×5″ heavyweight sketch) and the image to make. Immediately found what I wanted to cut out. Sent it off the same day to Adina in Berkeley. Looking forward to seeing what happens over time to this very different invitation.
