When I received my original collage back, it was almost entirely made of handmade printed or painted papers. There were some fabric pieces and one magazine image. I left the fabric, but felt that the magazine image was demanding too much attention. I added more printed collage paper grass over the magazine image and in other areas of the ground to complete the natural scene.

I forgot to take a photo before I added on. This is Ann’s collage with (now) everyone’s contributions. This one, out of all of the collages so far, felt the most complete and resolved when I got it. This process has been a challenge for me!

I added more tree branch imagery. I think in my attempt to respect what others had done, it might have gotten (even more) busy. But I didn’t want to leave my tree branches simply sitting on top. In order to integrate my contribution, I re-adhered some of the leaves on top of my paper.

[On the left] is Maya’s collage with Kathleen’s and Lucy’s additions. [On the right] is Maya’s collage with my addition. I kept it simple because I felt it was becoming a little busy. I added the green and black piece in the upper left to hopefully tie in with some of the other greens in the collage. Now it will go to Margaret and then back to Maya for the final layer

This is Annie’s collage, with Margaret’s and my additions. I didn’t get a photo with just Margaret’s additions. I’m leaning into the tree theme. This is not a suggestion for a name (or is it…) but I was thinking of it as the forest of forgotten trees

This is Kathleen’s collage, with Lucy’s and now my additions. When I got it from Lucy I already loved it and didn’t think it needed a whole lot more. So I kept my additions small and simple: the bunny sniffing a flower, and the big blue butterfly. Now it goes on to Margaret

This is Lucy’s collage with my additions. I have a pile of gelli prints and I found this piece that seemed to want to go on the bottom of Lucy’s collage. And I loved the blue-green mono print of tree branches that Lucy made. It seemed to want a large turquoise tree in the foreground. Now it will go to Margaret for the next layer!

This one had a lot going one when I got it from Kathleen, so my plan to add a piece of collaged stripes seemed like it would be too busy. Instead I opted to cut away more of the interior space behind the figures and add a monoprint of oak trunks that I had.

I had a lot of fun painting many papers, then cutting them up and arranging them into a simple collage. I wanted to keep this round pretty plain and leave a lot of room for the next four people to add layers. I also didn’t want to use anything too precious and risk having it be covered up. Saving anything I really love for the last layer!

I chose a couple of simple gel prints I made some time ago and then had a lovely time using up a bunch of scraps. I have never done a project like this so I am looking forward to seeing how “my” collage progresses as well as what it feels like to add on to others’ collages.
