Having settled on 3.5″ x 5″ as our starting size I went to my postcard stack and found this one…a classic Pot Shots that was given to me as part of a pack from my uncle Casey decades ago. Most were funny or philosophical or somehow prescient. But this was an odd one; I didn’t know what to make of this one. Well, it turns out we’re going to be making a collaborative collage out of this one.
I started with the postcard, embroidered a heart behind the fence and sent it off to Jill.

In the last couple of years I have been using newspaper in my art work because it has become an interwoven element in the fabric of our daily lives. Good news, bad news, somehow we have to deal with it. This time I tried something new. I drenched the newspaper strips in glue and slapped them or let them fall onto a big piece of corrugated cardboard. So there is an element of randomness. From there I selected several cutouts. I am in two groups and I like the idea of a single origin that gets split and from there becomes two starters. I am excited to see how the two will evolve on their separate journeys. At some point in the process I realized that i signed up for the low cost, letter sized flexible mail category. So I had to delaminate the corrugated cardboard. Not easy! It got thin in some spots. Which required me to glue that onto a new piece of paper for support.

Heads up – Stay flexible.
When I went to mail my 10″ x 10″ collage, USPS said it was too stiff and did not qualify as a “large envelope”. They wanted to charge $8+ as a “package”. So, I then stripped out the corrugated cardboard backing, and now it’s in the mail for $1.98. Update: it arrived on time, intact and ready for the next iteration.

This is my first year being involved in this collaboration, and while I find it a bit intimidating and out of my comfort zone, it’s exciting to work together on a mutual art piece. I’m sure to learn a lot along the way. Thomas’s Collage (its name for now!) is 8 1/2 x 11 on 24 lb. paper. Since I work mostly in abstract, I began as usual with some brayered-on color, marks in black and white, asemic writing, and a bit of sheet music. Thanks to Bar for his suggestion to make it as flexible as possible for mailing. I mailed it today (for $1.98), September 14, to Becky, who should receive it in about 4 days.

I began my collage thinking about what it means to be a woman in our society. And by chance, I had in my stash of art/collage materials this incredible head! Hair in process of being curled maybe, make up on, who is she? Who am I as i think about my role of wife, mother, artist. I can’t wait to see this piece progress.
